Water on the floor comes from one of a few places: a blocked defrost drain that overflows, a cracked or loose water line, a failing inlet valve, or a door and gasket that let humid air condense. On dishwashers, leaks trace to the door seal, the sump, or the inlet valve. Finding the source is the whole job.
What to Check First
A few quick checks are safe to try before booking a technician:
- Locate where the water is actually pooling.
- Check the water line connections behind the unit.
- On a fridge, look for a clogged defrost drain.
- On a dishwasher, inspect the door gasket for debris.
Water and Floors
Wipe up standing water quickly to protect hardwood and finished ceilings below. If water is reaching an outlet or the appliance electrical, shut off power at the breaker first.
Likely Causes and Fixes
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What the Fix Involves |
|---|---|---|
Water under crisper | Clogged defrost drain | Clear the drain line and check the drain heater |
Puddle at the front | Door seal or dishwasher gasket | Replace the gasket and align the door |
Leak behind unit | Cracked line or inlet valve | Replace the water line or inlet valve |
Notes by Brand
The failure looks a little different across the brands we service. Here is what we check on each:
| Brand | What We Look At |
|---|---|
| Sub-Zero | Defrost drain and water-valve leaks on built-in units. |
| Bosch | Dishwasher door seals and the anti-flood E15 base-pan switch. |
| Miele | Inlet valves and F11/F14 drainage faults. |
| Wolf | Steam-oven reservoirs and drain lines. |
| Viking | Ice and water dispenser lines behind the unit. |
| KitchenAid | Sump and spray-arm seals on dishwashers. |
Have a Sub-Zero or Wolf That Needs Attention?
Book online and a brand-focused technician will diagnose it. Diagnostic and travel fees, if applicable, are confirmed before the appointment and before repair approval.
When to Call a Technician
If you cannot find an obvious source, or the leak returns after clearing the drain, book a technician. Hidden valve and sump leaks are best traced with the unit partly disassembled.
